Voting Methods

MDS shall make decisions by:
--50% plus 1
--2/3 majority (after attempting and failing to arrive at consensus)
--75% majority (after attempting and failing to arrive at consensus)
--consensus minus 1
--pure consensus
Voters need to rank their choices in order of preference--1 through 5. In case of a tie between two choices, IRV works by instantly using everyone's second (or next ranked) choice to decide the tie.

I think the voting method

I think the voting method should depend on the decision being made. I am not a proponent of a "one-size fits all" approach to decision-making.

I agree

Right now we can create binary, ranking, and proportional polls. The issue Bob was addressing is that more tahn one person objected to not getting a second choice out of a five topic field IPV voting alleviates that issue - if people don't want to exercise their rankings they don't have to - just pick thier 1st choice.

Can you come up with an example of what method/decision variances you're thinking of?

It seems to me that maybe

It seems to me that maybe MDS should vote on whether or not this website can speak for MDS, as it claims to do by naming a poll "Voting Methods" and asking how MDS should vote. It seems to me that the only people taking part on this website are those that have stirred up the MDS hornets nest and caused problems and dissention. In other words, people who are NOT representative of MDS and have NO RIGHT to speak for MDS via poll or not, especially when that poll is voted upon by such a small minority of people in the organization. This is the same thing that was complained about by Monty and Cloudy and Ray when MDS inc was formed. A small group making decisions for the organization...the group of 10 I think they were called. Now tyou people want to make decisions with even smaller numbers? I smell hypocrisy.

Thanks for contributing this

Thanks for contributing this poll, Bob.

MDS voting straw poll or actual vote?

Bob,
I suggest you post a notice at MDS Announcements that this poll is running, and inviting as many as possible to participate, especially in the discussion of it (include the link, of course).

I think we might begin to talk about quorum issues for any MDS membership-wide decision, and how to get the maximum number of members together on any one question. We are spread out at Derderian's listserv, New Left Cafe, MDS Announcements, Tom Good's website and this new website.

Making decisions at a physical meeting, without first deciding on whether it is based on one person one vote, or based on some selection (election?) of delegates with proportional voting rights or what ?, is where we are headed with the Chicago meeting, unless something is done immediately to change it.

We do need to decide this and we need to do it now, somehow.
