I know that voting is democratic, but is it democratic to have the vote moderator decide on the 4 options without a vote? A vote moderator can easily direct people towards a desireable choice simply by wording, such as the wording on the new poll "let Bush Decide" is this really the only availble 4th option? I mean we can choose between voting on this poll, the NLC or just let Bush decide? Both of the first two options are extremely limited and biased, the 4th option is simply ludicrous.
What about voting via snail mail as an option, or voting as a chapter at a convention (electorate votes) or voting via phone conference, this would eliminate the ability of someone to vote twice. There are so many options available, but the vote administrator has already decided the only "practical" options from hios view point, and combined with no write in capability this process is extremely flawed. The vote is extremely invalid.
And the fact that anyone can create a poll (as things are now - (I'm working from a least restricvtive to mopre as the community calls for it), helps to mitigate that fact.
For instance - if you have a poll idea that covers the same ground you coulud create it and ask those that vored to vote in your poll as well. As it is know we are experimenting and learning to use these new tools. No actions (or end of poll, even) have been actuallty proposed.
Each Poll has this comment field so write in nominations and their second (if that's the procedure) could allow the poll to be updated with the new choice.
Great points - always good to suggest solutions with your critiques, or so my grandpa told me.
I just received a link to this site on the NLC list. Is this an official site of MDS? There seems to be another MDS website out there...http://movementforademocraticsociety.org and it looks like it is hosted by next left notes, which had the first one. What is going on? Who owns this site?
These are different sites with different formats and features. http://movementforademocraticsociety.org has great links to local MDS Chapters which are the backbone of the Movement.
There can not be too many resources applied to a Movememt for a Democratic Society, can there? This site is an experiment in online community building, if that interests you - Welcome!
MDS Chapters (of the local geographic type) are not necessarily what MDS ought to be building. The MDS general membership meetings in NYC on 2/16/07 and 2/17/07 addressed this question some, and it deserves much more attention. How will MDS local chapters fill any niche that is not redundant with all the existing local left groups? How will we avoid being just another little left group competing with all the ohers for the same members in the same places?
Should MDS instead focus more on non-geographical community organizing (e.g., chapters based on connecting rank & file labor activists; connecting progressive non-partisan elected officials, etc.) ? Should we define our niche as trying to organize better connections between existing networks of activists?
I am counting on you to help create a Forum for increasing the membership's awareness of the problems American immigrants are dealing with.
I see too many similarities to this governments (and the population's) attitudes toward "illegals" as existed in pre-nazi Germany towards the Gypsies and Jews. Germany was a "democracy" at that time as well.
It is not really democratic. It is not undemocratic either. There is no national structure for MDS the org, so I guess anyone can do this. Hell, we should see how many different sites we can get up and running...there are 2 MDS sites and counting....

Yes - most of your points are well taken -

vote for the website? how is that a question even?
I am baffled by the question posed for this poll. Why would we be voting for the website at all? Voting about how to use it is a different question.

What does it mean to be Official?
The site at http://movementforademocraticsociety.org is owned and maintained by Tom G, hosted on BlueHost. This site is owned by A P., hosted on Bluehost.

Recruit new members to the website -outreach
This website should be publicized a widely as possible and many more new members recruited to it.

Recruit ON!
Very glad to see you here Jim.

Checking out the features
The purpose of this poll is purely demonstrational though I would hope you'll participate - I'm not voting as I've already had enough say....
Can we do this?
Is this democratic?
